Feb. 8, 2000:Watertown's 20-year reign as host city of the Miss New York State Scholarship Pageant is being threatened by competing proposals from groups in Albany and New York City.

25 years ago

Feb. 8, 1985:A large part of the coating operations at the Newton Falls Paper Mill Inc. will close, idling more than 110 full-time employees. The length of the shutdown is not known, but mill officials anticipate it will be short term.

50 years ago

Feb. 8, 1960:Two municipal parking lots with different regulations may come in for City Council discussion tonight. Mayor William G. Lachenauer said he favors having parking lot regulations similar to street parking meter controls. He advocates prohibition of parking in both the Paddock Park and City Hall areas between 2 and 6 a.m., the same as on the city streets.

75 years ago

Feb. 8, 1935:A 300-gallon dismantled copper still, a five-gallon can of alleged alcohol and a 50-gallon barrel filled with mash were seized by a raiding party of Watertown police officers and federal agents at the home of James Spano, Breen Avenue. Mr. Spano will be charged with the manufacture of spirituous distilled liquor without paying the Internal Revenue tax and without securing a liquor license.

100 years ago

Feb. 8, 1910:Plans have begun for the opening of the children's playgrounds at the Lamon Street and Cooper Street schools the coming summer. The Municipal Improvement League will make an appropriation with which to assist in carrying on the playground work. It is thought it will be necessary to expend $250 for the salaries of instructors.

125 years ago

Feb. 8, 1885:Isaac L. Huntington, Theresa, is, next to Mr. Snell, Three Mile Bay, the oldest justice of the peace in Jefferson County. Mr. Huntington was elected in 1856, having served 29 years, and his docket shows 1,886 judgments rendered.
