Police seeking witnesses

in series of burglaries

LOWVILLE — The Lewis County Sheriff's Department is looking for witnesses who can link a black and gray Dodge Dakota to a series of camp and residential burglaries that have been occurring since mid-January in the Tug Hill region.

Leads have been developed indicating that two men in their 20s have used the truck, an older model two-wheel drive vehicle with a red pin stripe, during the commission of break-ins in the towns of Harrisburg, Pinckney and Montague, said Investigator Devere D. Rumble. He asked informants to call the sheriff's office at 376-3511, and promised confidentiality.

Mr. Rumble said the intruders are passing up the normal loot in house burglaries, settling on small amounts of cash. His department has received complaints involving 13 camps and two homes, he said. One of the latter is owned by people who are away for the winter. He declined to identify the crime victims.

Magazines worth $5,000

stolen from Rutland home

State police are looking for someone who might try peddling some old magazines.

Approximately 150 issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland that are dated from the 1960s and 1970s were stolen in a house burglary Feb. 2 on Route 12 in the town of Rutland, police said. Their value is estimated at $5,000, according to police.

The publications carried photographs and stories about classic horror movies.

A small amount of cash also was stolen in the intrusion, reported to have occurred between 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m., police said.

The identity of the homeowner was withheld at his request, but he has told police he is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves. Informants should call state police at 782-3691.

Police: county jail inmate

hit other man with crutch

A prisoner in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building grabbed another inmate's crutch late Sunday afternoon and used it to hit the other man on the back, according to the sheriff's office.

Gary W. Tarlton Jr., 29, of 14 Public Square, was charged Sunday night with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He is jailed awaiting sentencing Feb. 26 in Jefferson County Court on a charge of attempted third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

The sheriff's office alleges that he caused unspecified injury to Ryan M. Martin, 25, of 108 S. Orchard St., who was jailed on Jan. 23 on charges of felony criminal contempt, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment.

cocaine at county jail

A Theresa woman was found possessing a small quantity of crack cocaine early Sunday while being jailed for driving with a suspended license, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

Karen J. Levy, 44, of 58897 County Route 46, faces charges of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree promoting prison contraband, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and speeding at 72 mph in a 55-mph speed zone of Route 11 in the town of LeRay. She was released on $500 bail from the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and awaits prosecution.

Utica man allegedly stole

baby formula worth $205

A Utica man was charged with petit larceny Saturday afternoon after he allegedly stole several cans of powdered baby formula from a grocery store in Watertown.

City police charged David J. Dickan, 49, of 1910 Baker St., with petit larceny at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Great American, 672 State St.

Police allege that he hid 14 cans of Enfamil lipil powder formula, valued at $205.66, under his coat and attempted to leave the store without paying.

Mr. Dickan was processed at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and released on $500 bail. He is to appear in Watertown City Court.

woman's bed, licking foot

MASSENA — A Massena man charged with jumping into a stranger's bed and licking her foot has been released after posting $1,000 bail.

Village police charged Barry K. Hill III, 20, of 158 Water St., with two counts of second-degree criminal trespass and a single count of second-degree harassment.

Police said Mr. Hill reportedly entered two different apartments at a complex at 2 Willow St. shortly after 3:30 a.m. Thursday.

In one apartment, a 25-year-old woman said, she woke up at 3:40 a.m. and found a stranger in her bed, licking her foot.

Police say man smashed

guitar over woman's head

TUPPER LAKE — An village man is accused of smashing a guitar over a woman's head during a domestic dispute.

Travis J. LaBarge, 27, of 29 E. Rounds St., was charged Sunday with second-degree assault, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, third-degree criminal mischief and aggravated criminal contempt, village police said. The unidentified woman needed several stitches to close the cut on her head.

He was arraigned in Village Court and sent to Franklin County jail, Malone, on $7,500 bail or $15,000 bond.

Three homes burglarized;

thieves take coins, bills

CANTON — State police and St. Lawrence County sheriff's detectives are investigating three home burglaries from late January or early February near the village of Hermon.

The thieves reportedly stole a large number of coins, including nickels, quarters and dimes, along with several half-dollar and Sacagawea dollar coins, from the homes, a state police investigator said. Two $100 bills also were reported stolen.

Anyone with information can call state police at 379-2222 or the county sheriff's office at 379-0012.

Carthage man is charged

with harassing his wife

CARTHAGE — Village police allege that a man threw a soiled baby diaper in his wife's face, then struck her in the face with his hand.

Andrew C. Kerr, 21, of 260 State St., Apt. 207, was released without bail by Village Justice S. Lucille Shettleton following his arrest Thursday night on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree harassment.

Police said that after hitting his wife, Catherine M., 25, he picked up their baby and left the apartment while she was calling for help.

Man accused of slapping

another in back of head

Watertown police charged Joseph M. Cousins Jr., 23, of 678 Bronson St., Upper Apt., with second-degree harassment about 4 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Gotham Street for allegedly slapping Joshua M. Ebdon in the back of the head.

He is to appear in Watertown City Court.
