March 5, 2000:An ice floe on the Oswegatchie River has separated the deck of the Wanakena footbridge from its northern tower, but suspension cables are intact. Built by Rich Lumber Co. in 1902, it might be the longest wooden suspension bridge in continuous use in the state. Town officials and residents hope it can be repaired and reopened after nature takes its course this spring.

March 5, 1985:The YMCA is exploring leasing the Olympic-size Massey Street swimming pool and reopening it.

50 years ago

March 5, 1960:The Rutland Railway Corp., Rutland, Vt., announced that taxes and lack of business are forcing the firm to consider abandonment of railway operation into Ogdensburg.

75 years ago

March 5, 1935:S.S. McCumber, treasurer of the Jefferson County Agricultural Society, announced the possibility that a major league baseball team will play an exhibition game in Watertown. He hopes to hire either the St. Louis Cardinals or the Boston Braves. An effort is being made to have either the Deans, Dizzy and Daffy, or Babe Ruth here with the team.

100 years ago

March 5, 1910:The Court of Appeals dismissed the charge of murder against James D. Farmer in the killing of Sarah Brennan. A jury in County Court declared him innocent of accessory after commitment of the crime by his wife, Mary. The remaining charge of forgery in connection with the bogus deed to the Brennan property on Paddy Hill was nullified. Mr. Farmer was arrested in 1908 and remained 52 weeks on death row.

125 years ago

March 5, 1885:Several suits were brought in the Supreme Court against the Utica & Black River Railroad, growing out of the accident at Price's Crossing, near Remsen, about three years ago. In one brought by William W. Thomas and another, as administrators, a verdict was found against the company. The case went to the Court of Appeals, which affirmed the judgment of the lower court with costs.
