March 9, 2000:Watertown Savings Bank is proposing a $2.5 million project including a new building on what is now the parking lot between its main office, 111 Clinton St., and the office building it owns at 145 Clinton St.

25 years ago

March 9, 1985:Clayton Elementary School has dramatically reduced the number of pupils needing remedial reading help, a success story which seems to have no simple explanation. School records indicate that in 1973, 25.9 percent of the pupils were enrolled in a remedial reading program, and today, only 9.2 percent need the special attention.

50 years ago

March 9, 1960:The number of investment clubs in the north country has more than tripled since 1957. Eight clubs were operating in this area in 1957, but today there are 26. Approximately 400 people are participating in the activities of these clubs.

75 years ago

March 9, 1935:Rights of way are to be purchased by the county for 11.03 miles of new concrete state highway connecting the villages of Clayton and Alexandria Bay. The road will follow the old Thousand Islands scenic route along the St. Lawrence River from Clayton past the farm of America's noted comedienne, May Irwin.

100 years ago

March 9, 1910:Racing around Curtis curve, one mile east of Theresa, a St. Lawrence division passenger train, running between Ogdensburg and Utica, was wrecked this morning. The Pullman car, the last car, jumped the track and plunged down a 15-foot embankment. The car is in about 2 feet of water.

125 years ago

March 9, 1885:The printers who have entered the five-mile race at the rink are Peterson of the Daily Times, Trainor of the ReUnion, Harrington of the Watertown Post, Clark of O.E. Hungerford's and Merrick of Holbrook's. There seems to be considerable diversity of opinion as to which one has the swiftest pair of skates, but by many it is thought it lies between the Post and the Times.
