OGDENSBURG — Tops Friendly Markets announced today its plans to close its Ogdensburg P&C grocery store on April 10.

The announcement was made this afternoon in an e-mail from Tops spokeswoman Katherine L. McKenna. Employees at the store received the news this morning.

“It's a shock,” said Robert J. Messina, an 18-year employee.

He said he was not sure if he would be keeping his job, or could be moved to another store.

In November, the Ogdensburg store reported 20 full-time and 28 part-time employees.

Price Chopper purchased P&Cs from Tops in Canton, Potsdam, Massena, Gouverneur and West Carthage. Those stores are expected to close in early April and reopen under the new brand in late May.

Tops retains ownership of stores in Ogdensburg and Watertown. An employee at the Watertown P&C today said workers there have not been told anything regarding the status of that store.
