March 14, 2000:Watertown's community policing program may be expanded to include two satellite stations. The city's first try at community policing began in May 1997, when it operated a satellite station on Public Square. Officer Craig S. Dupre, who is assigned the station, told council members that he thinks the effort is working.

March 14, 1985:Only 21 candidates are vying for 17 mayoral posts in Tuesday's village elections in Jefferson County. Trustee races, with 53 candidates for 38 positions, will bring a little more color to the annual voting in the county's 20 villages.

March 14, 1960:Subzero temperatures every night in the past week have continued the delay in the 1960 sugarbush operations that normally would be under way now with the first run of sap converted to maple syrup or sugar. At least three sugar makers in the Hopkinton and Nicholville area east of Potsdam are making ready for the first run of sap.

March 14, 1935:The cooperation between Jefferson and Lewis counties' sportsmen and others is credited with having encouraged the conservation commissioner to withdraw his opposition to the bill to prohibit netting in Black River Bay next summer.

March 14, 1910:After doing business in temporary quarters on the east side of Washington Street, the National Bank & Loan Co. resumed operations at its old stand, but were it not for the familiar faces, one would hardly recognize the place. The new bank, in its equipment and artistic interior, surpasses anything of the kind in this section of the state.

March 14, 1885:The Sandy Creek News says that the skating rink in that village was well patronized last week, but the management could not pay expenses and so discontinued it after Saturday. On Monday the men had to leave their skates to secure their board at the hotel and to pawn a watch, chain and ring to get out of town.
