March 17, 2000:With gasoline prices soaring and the tourism season approaching, some Jefferson County legislators would support cutting sales tax at the gas pumps. County legislators would at least discuss dropping the county's 3 percent share of sales tax on gasoline, if state lawmakers can agree on a proposal.

25 years ago

March 17, 1985:North country farmers may enjoy an extra penny or more for each 100 pounds of milk sold next fall owing to a recommendation to expand the federal milk marketing area to include 15 counties in northeast Pennsylvania.

50 years ago

March 17, 1960:The Seaway Shopping Center, just outside the city on outer Mill Street, will be expanded through construction of an L addition to be started this fall or in the spring of 1961. Two large stores, the names of which are being withheld, have signed long-term leases to occupy the major portion of the proposed addition.

75 years ago

March 17, 1935:Windswept ice, piled 8 to 12 feet high, jammed itself in jagged masses along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River Sunday. The wind attained a velocity of 60 miles an hour as it swept over the lake in the wake of a warm rain.

100 years ago

March 17, 1910:The curfew is to be sounded by the town clock in the First Baptist Church tower. It is proposed that when the clock sounds the hour of 8 p.m. in the winter and 9 p.m. in the summer, all children shall be off the street. If they are not indoors or under parental authority when the clock strikes the hour, they are subject to arrest by the police, and the parents are liable to fine for violating the ordinance.

125 years ago

March 17, 1885:George W. Morrow, ex-clerk of the Lewis County Board of Supervisors, indicted for drawing orders to the amount of $541.35, payable to himself, without authority, was sentenced at Lowville to two years and one month in Auburn prison.
