March 18, 2000:At least a dozen north country residents have received hand injuries from playing "Mario Party" video games, and the state's assistant attorney general in Watertown has one suggestion on preventing the blisters, burns and bruises: order some free gloves. He said north country residents who own the game are eligible to receive a free pair of protective gloves from Nintendo of America Inc., Redmond, Wash.

March 18, 1985:The elusive black panther is on the prowl again. James Pitcher, Chippewa Bay Road, near Hammond, was planning to show pictures of what he believes is a black panther that he spotted in his backyard. A DEC official said so far, there is no confirmation that Mr. Pitcher saw a panther, and hair samples have been sent to Albany for analysis.

50 years ago

March 18, 1960:Mohawk Airlines said it was suspending all flight service until an agreement was signed with stewardesses, who struck briefly in a dispute over wages and hours. The stewardesses have said they were ready to return to work. Mohawk said that without a signed agreement the stewardesses could reinstate a strike at any moment under the rules of the Railway Labor Act.

75 years ago

March 18, 1935:Nearly 400 soldiers will be added to the personnel at Madison Barracks, provided the Army appropriation bill, now before Congress, passes. The strength at the post now is about 800.

100 years ago

March 18, 1910:With all the "striking" drivers securing another job, peace and harmony reigns over the troubled camp of the Watertown Milk Co. The drivers who quit have established milk routes of their own, and are running an opposition to the company.

125 years ago

March 18, 1885:A 15-pound cannonball has been found on Chimney Island, St. Lawrence River. It bears the marks of great age, and was probably used in the engagement at the capture of Fort Levi on that island in 1760. — Brockville Times.
