A town of Wilna man was back in jail Tuesday evening after six new charges were filed against him, bringing to at least 18 the number of counts he has pending.
Jay S. Thomas, 38, of 24773 County Route 37, was committed without bail to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building by town of Watertown Justice James P. McClusky. The new charges, lodged by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, are two counts of burglary, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and second-degree counts of third-degree grand larceny and second-degree forgery.
He awaits grand jury action on those, as well as charges lodged in August and December.
According to documents filed in town of Watertown Court, Mr. Thomas was accused Tuesday of:
■ Burglarizing on Aug. 15 the home of William Lawrence, Boot Jack Hill Road, town of Rutland, and stealing checks and a driver's license.
■ Burglarizing the John Hoover Inn, Evans Mills, on Aug. 16, stealing liquor and keys, and damaging a safe, cash register, door and wall.
■ Stealing a purse belonging to Shelly Delaney on Aug. 16 in the John Hoover Inn.
■ Forging and cashing a $50 check belonging to Mr. Lawrence on Aug. 15 at the John Hoover Inn.
■ Forging and cashing a $23.26 check belonging to his mother, Tracy Thomas, on March 10 at Hannaford, outer Arsenal Street.
The pending charges from last year are:
■ In August, he was charged with second-degree burglary in connection with an intrusion Aug. 12 at the Gardnerville Road home of Elizabeth Beaman, where a loss exceeding $10,000 was set in the theft of jewelry, a computer, cooling station, scrapbooking kit and checkbook.
■ In August, Watertown police cited three counts of second-degree criminal possession of forged instrument, two counts third-degree criminal possession of forged instrument and single counts of grand larceny, falsifying business records and petit larceny. He withdrew $2,750 from account of Stephen Foley, Deferiet, police alleged.
■ In December, the sheriff's department charged second-degree burglary, occurring in July at the Karen Thomas residence, 203 Brown Blvd., Brownville, where personal checks were stolen.
■ In December, state police cited third-degree burglary in connection with a break-in at O'Larry's Dolls, Great Bend, in July, where a television and liquor were stolen.
■ In December, he was charged in Lewis County with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument for allegedly cashing in August a forged $750 check.
He was released on bail following the arrests in December.
