Marybelle Bancroft

GOUVERNEUR — Marybelle Bancroft, age 82, of Gouverneur, passed away on March 17, 2010 at E.J. Noble Hospital.

Marybelle was born on April 19, 1927 in Gouverneur. She was a daughter of the late George and Belle (Yerdon) Macaulay. She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1946.

Marybelle married Bruce R. Bancroft on September 18, 1946 at the Gouverneur Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joseph Schofield officiating. Mr. Bancroft passed away on May 6, 1985.

Mrs. Bancroft had lived in Elmdale before moving to Gouverneur in 1946. She worked as a cashier for J.J. Newberry's and also for Grant's store, both in Gouverneur. Marybelle was a member of the Gouverneur Presbyterian Church, the Gouverneur V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the Gouverneur Senior Citizens and was a devoted Yankee fan.

Her survivors include her son and his wife, David and Joyce Bancroft of Oxbow, five step-grandchildren, Brenda Wainwright of Kalamazoo, MI, Judy Tubolino of LaFargeville, Brian Backus of Theresa, Douglas Backus of Dexter, and Tammy McEathron of Gouverneur; eleven step-great grandchildren, and nine step-great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Sylvia Macaulay; eight nieces and five nephews.

In addition to her husband she is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Hazel Fenton; and her two brothers, Ernest and Robert Macaulay.

Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Saturday from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. Her funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Richard Mayforth officiating. Burial will be in the East Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations made in Marybelle's memory may be made to the Gouverneur Presbyterian Church or the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad.
