Watertown police arrested five people during a fight early Sunday inside the Paddock Arcade that left a man in critical condition in a Syracuse hospital.

Police said Paul R. Calhoun, 41, of 38052 Route 12E, Clayton, shoved Steven M. Hirst, 486 Portage St., backward, causing Mr. Hirst to hit his head, rendering him unconscious.

Mr. Calhoun was charged with first-degree assault and had posted $2,000 bail from the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building by Sunday afternoon.

Late Sunday, Mr. Hirst was in critical condition at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, a hospital spokesman said.

Police allege that while they were breaking up the fight, Desiree H. Luia, 23, of 21 Gardner Road, Philadelphia, attempted to take Officer Patrick C. Rawson's gun, and she allegedly pushed the officer into a glass door, breaking it and causing the glass to fall on the officer's head and neck. Police did not say whether Mr. Rawson was injured in the scuffle.

Mrs. Luia was charged with two counts of resisting arrest, second-degree harassment and second-degree reckless endangerment. She was held at the Public Safety Building on $500 bail.

Police said Mrs. Luia also tried to stop them from arresting Joshua W. Price, 24, of 9853B Sandy Creek Road, Fort Drum, who allegedly was yelling profanities and swinging his arms at another, unnamed male.

Mr. Price was charged with disorderly conduct and handed over to military police.

While officers were attempting to arrest Mrs. Luia, her husband, Joseph J.K. Luia, 24, allegedly tried to stop them. He was charged with resisting arrest and was released to military police.

Also arrested was Jason M. Diaz, 26, of 405 Gaffney Drive, Apt. 8, who police identified as a bouncer at the Paddock Club. He was charged with acting as a security guard without a license, resisting arrest, second-degree harassment and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.

He allegedly grabbed and shoved officers while they were arresting Mrs. Luia. He also was released to military police.
