CANTON — A Syracuse man will serve five years in state prison for stabbing Lawrence B. Grenier III in a drug-related incident last year.
Albert L. Sherman Jr., 29, was sentenced Monday by St. Lawrence County Court Judge Jerome J. Richards on a second-degree assault charge. He was initially charged with first-degree assault in the Aug. 9 stabbing of Mr. Grenier, 32, Ogdensburg.
Mr. Sherman was accused of stabbing Mr. Grenier several times in the chest and abdomen after chasing him across the Nice N Easy convenience store parking lot on Champlain Street, Ogdensburg. Mr. Grenier was hospitalized at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, and later released.
Mr. Sherman was released to probation supervision in mid-December when he accepted a plea deal from St. Lawrence County prosecutors.
Separately, Mr. Sherman faces charges in Syracuse for allegedly being involved in a Jan. 26 robbery of a diner, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. He reportedly led police on a short chase when they located him. He was charged with third-degree robbery.
In other court proceedings,Kory L. Gates, 21, of 1261 Jay St., Apt. 411, Ogdensburg, pleaded innocent to two counts of first-degree assault and a single count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
She is accused of injuring Joan Clary on Aug. 21 in the town of Oswegatchie by cutting her with a knife on the face, head, arm, chest and torso.
Devon Apgar, 21, of 1989 County Route 38, Norfolk, was sentenced to five years of probation and time served after confessing to hitting another man on the head with a wooden board.
Mr. Apgar pleaded guilty in January to attempted second-degree assault, a felony. He admitted to hitting Nicholas Fiacco on April 21 in Norfolk.
In a separate case, Mr. Apgar pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal sale of marijuana for having more than 2 ounces of pot on July 21, 2009, in the village of Potsdam. He will be sentenced May 10.
