TURIN — The academic leaders for the class of 2010 at South Lewis Senior High School are Roger Young, valedictorian, Helenka Ostrum, salutatorian, and Victoria Baslow, technical honor student.
Mr. Young, son of Jim and Cindy Young, Lyons Falls, has an academic average of 97.73. He is a member of the varsity soccer, ski and track and field teams and was a member of the South Lewis State Band and select chorus. He took part in several school musicals, including this year's production of "Mirror Image."
He is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Varsity Club, Whiz Quiz team, Students Against a Vanishing Environment, Youth Advisory Council and Friends of Rachel.
Mr. Young will pursue a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering in the fall.
Miss Ostrum, daughter of Peter Ostrum and Loretta Lepkowski, Glenfield, has an academic average of 96.94. She is studying in Portugal as an American Field Service foreign exchange student.
Active in sports and academics, Miss Ostrum wrote a weekly sports column, titled "The Falcon Corner," for her local newspaper. She received the George Eastman Young Leaders Award and the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award.
She enjoys cross-country running and downhill skiing and is a member of the track and field team. She has received a Scholar Athlete Award, Ski Coaches Award, Cross-Country Coaches Award, and 7 News Academic All-Star Award and is a Lions Club scholar. She is a member of the Lowville Village Jazz Orchestra and the Lewis County Teen Ambassadors.
Miss Ostrum plans to attend college in the fall, hoping to study abroad and major in international relations or communications.
Miss Baslow, daughter of Rod and Sue Baslow, Lyons Falls, has an academic average of 91.11. She is president of the Family Career and Community Leaders of America and a member of the National Honor Society, Skills USA and the National Technological Honor Society. She also participated on the women's track team.
Miss Baslow plans to attend Alfred State College, where she will pursue a degree in culinary arts. She hopes to open her own bakery in the future.
