St. Lawrence University strength and conditioning coach Mike Elberty was announced as the head coach of the Thousand Islands Privateers of the newly-formed Federal Hockey League.

He plans to remain with the Saints while coaching the Privateers. He said at a press conference Wednesday that he hopes to bring some St. Lawrence players to the Privateers.

"St. Lawrence has such an extensive network," Elberty said. "You have to use every resource you have."

Elberty did not mention any specific players he'll try to bring to the professional level, but will begin signing graduating seniors from around the country immediately.

"Most of the good players will be lower end Dvision I guys or high end Division III guys," he said. "I'd like to get young guys who are kind of on the way up. You're going to get a consistent work ethic. Coming out of St. Lawrence you really get a feel for the kind of kids you want."

The Privateers will being their inaugural season in November at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center at Alexandria Bay.

The arena will undergo mandatory renovations beginning next month to fulfill its contract obligation with Thousand Islands. It plans to accommodate up to 4,000 fans with added seating, new boards along the ice, and locker room and coach's office upgrades.
