SACKETS HARBOR — State employees at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site are waiting for lawmakers to pass a state budget for the 2010-11 year, but two of the four full-time workers are waiting at Westcott Beach State Park.
Two battlefield maintenance workers were moved to Westcott Beach because of Gov. David A. Paterson's proposed budget, which includes the closing of state parks to offset some of the $9.2 billion deficit. Susan N. Gibson, president of the board of trustees for the Battlefield Alliance, said Constance B. Barone, site manager, and Stephen R. Wallace, an interpretive programs assistant, are still at the battlefield.
Mrs. Gibson said she would like to see the employees return to the battlefield full-time, but it all depends on the budget the state passes.
Mrs. Barone said by now the site normally would have hired the part-time summer help and interpreters it needs for a Memorial Day opening weekend.
