July 29, 2000:Calvary Assembly of God, Carthage, will celebrate its 70th anniversary during a special Sunday morning service. According to the present pastor, the Rev. Anthony P. Niger II, the Carthage-area congregation was started in 1930 when revival meetings were held in the Opera House on North Mechanic Street and later on South Mechanic Street.

July 29, 1985:Jet service will be returning to Watertown International Airport by the first of the year as Empire Airlines replaces its five remaining propeller aircraft with Fokker F-28 jets. Although the airport's two 5,000-foot runways are adequate, some modifications will be needed to meet security measures required under the Federal Air Regulations.

July 29, 1960:The state department of public works has set Labor Day 1961 as the target date for opening of through traffic on the Watertown to Syracuse section of the Empire Stateway, 11 months earlier than previously anticipated.

75 years ago

July 29, 1935:Nearly two weeks before the giant first Army maneuvers are to get under way in Jefferson County the last two weeks in August, the regular Army, 6,000 strong, will arrive to complete preparations for the coming of the mass of 30,000 National Guardsmen the weekend of Aug. 17.

100 years ago

July 29, 1910:Plans have been made by the Sisters of St. Joseph that will transform the Immaculate Heart Academy on the north side into a school for boys exclusively and cause the erection of another school for girls in a different part of the city, or just outside the city if possible.

125 years ago

July 29, 1885:Fire broke out in Mannsville, threatening to envelop the entire hamlet. There is no fire apparatus there, and water for fire apparatus cannot be had. A telegram was sent to Watertown for help. The men arrived promptly and did good work getting the fire under control. Every place of business, the hotel, the Church of the Disciples, etc., are destroyed.
