Clifton Sherman, 82, Coffeen St. passed away Wednesday morning at the Samaritan Medical Center. He had been a resident at Mercy of Northern New York for the past year.
The funeral will Saturday, Sept. 4th, 11 a.m. at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with Rev. Leon "Toby" Schilling officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Sept. 3rd, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Clifton was born in Watertown, January 12, 1928, a son of Kenneth and Violet Graham Sherman. He was educated in the Watertown School system. Mr. Sherman joined the US Navy in January of 1946. He served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations aboard the USS Hanson. He was honorably discharged in November of 1947. Mr. Sherman returned to Watertown and was employed at the Watertown Steam Laundry for a short time before going to work in April of 1955 at the New York Air Brake as a machinist. He retired from the Air Brake on May 1, 1990 after 37 years of service.
Mr. Sherman coached the New York Air Brake softball team. He was a New York Yankee baseball fan and a Dallas Cowboy football fan. He enjoyed walking. Mr. Sherman sang in the choir as a youth at the First Baptist Church.
He married Colleen Pfister Smiley January 29, 1949 in Dexter.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and their wives, Wayne and Helen Smiley, Patrick and Deborah Sherman, all of Watertown. Three daughters and a son-in-law, Christine McCargar, Gail M. Smiley and Deborah and Michael Natali, all of Watertown. 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren. One Sister Helen Valler, Pulaski. Nieces and nephews.
A sister, Beulah Huxter predeceased him.
