Is a party endorsement an asset in this political climate? On Sept. 14, the primaries will be held. In the 47th Senatorial District Democratic primary, Michael Hennessey will be facing Maria Pavelock, the endorsed Democratic candidate.

Ms. Pavelock was presented to Lewis and St. Lawrence counties before she was officially endorsed by the Oneida Executive Committee and obviously before she was thoroughly vetted. The attraction to this candidate is that she would finance her own campaign and not ask for money from the cash-strapped Oneida Democratic Committee which barely has enough money to get out their mailings.

Not having any experience that would qualify her for this office, she listed qualifications that were later found to be embellished (the polite word). Even now she lists on her website as having been part of the Polish Solidarity movement. The problem with that is that the Polish embassy says that before 1980 there was no Solidarity Party, and Ms. Pavelock was not in Poland at that time. We would have to take her word for it that maybe she was part of some youthful underground group in Poland, but her word is the problem.

Trust is something that will be essential in this political climate. What also will be essential is the need for the senator from the upstate and northern districts to not be usurped by the downstate interests.

Only Mike Hennessey has the tenacity and courage to stand up to both the downstate influence and, if need be, to represent the 47th's taxpayer interests.
