Potsdam girls soccer rides goal-scoring of Grace in win

POTSDAM — Cassie Grace scored two goals to lead the Potsdam girls soccer team past St. Lawrence Central 5-0 in a semifinal game of the Jeffers Tournament at Potsdam High School on Friday.

Potsdam (1-0) will face Norwood-Norfolk for the championship at 9 a.m. today while the Larries (0-1) face Colton-Pierrepont in the consolation game at the same time.

Monique Cornette, Tess Hazen and Lia Davis also scored for Potsdam.

NORWOOD-NORFOLK 1,

COLTON-PIERREPONT 0 (OT)

Morgan Langtry scored an overtime goal to send the Flyers past Colton-Pierrepont (0-1) in the other Jeffers Tournament semifinal.

Brynn Tebo stopped three shots for the Flyers (1-0) and Alex Sochia made 12 saves for Colton-Pierrepont.

JAMESVILLE-DEWITT 6,

WATERTOWN 2

Tessa Devereaux scored three goals and added an assist, while Maddie Devereaux chipped in two goals to pace Jamesville-DeWitt to an opening-round victory over Watertown in the Jamesville-DeWitt Tournament.

Jessica Holmes' goal in the 24th minute of the first half gave the host school a 4-0 lead through halftime.

The Cyclones scored both of their goals in the second half by Maureen Keggins and Morgan Cadwell.

Watertown goalkeepers Kathleen Bacsik and Katie Bresko combined for eight saves.

SOUTH JEFFERSON 3, CARTHAGE 2

Kerri Keegan stripped the ball from a defender and scored the game winner from about 10 yards to lift the Spartans to a season-opening nonleague victory at Carthage.

Melissa Abbatte and Mary Cramer scored first-half goals, and Keegan also supplied an assist for South Jefferson.

Mackenzie Kidder assisted goals by Meghan Serota and Haley Upton for Carthage.

LOWVILLE 6, BEAVER RIVER 0

Taylor Haenlin provided two goals and three assists in the Red Raiders' season-opening nonleague victory over the Beavers.

Kylie McGrath, Olivia Hanno, Alex Virga and Morgan Lampson also scored, and Anna Teal and Morgan Widrick added assists for Lowville.

Jen Schermerhorn made five saves for the Beavers, and goalie Chelsea Finn turned away one shot for the Red Raiders.

BOYS SOCCER

WATERTOWN 6, GOUVERNEUR 0

Chris Waterbury's four goals easily lifted the Cyclones past the Wildcats in the opening round of the Cyclone Boost Club Tournament in Watertow.

The Cyclones will face Central Square, which lost 1-0 to Indian River, in the second round at 3 p.m. today in Watertown.

Cameron Devlin needed two saves for the shutout. Andy Pope and Shane Watson also scored for Watertown (1-0).

Seth Carr stopped 12 shots for Gouverneur (0-1).

LOWVILLE 1,

BELLEVILLE HENDERSON 0

Bryan Riley scored the eventual game winner in the first half to lift the Red Raiders to a season-opening nonleague victory over the Panthers.

It was the first game played, for any sport, on Lowville's new turf field.

Connor Rhodes made five saves for Lowville, and goalie Jake Fleury turned away six shots for Belleville Henderson.
