DEXTER — General Brown Central School District Superintendent Stephan J. Vigliotti Sr. is a finalist for a superintendent position in the Newfane Central School District in Niagara County.

Mr. Vigliotti and General Brown Board of Education President Jeffrey J. Timerman both said they had no comment on the matter Thursday.

Mr. Vigliotti has been a controversial figure at General Brown. Last school year, district residents submitted letters to the Board of Education and spoke out at meetings, asking the board not to renew his contract.

In April, the Times reported that Mr. Vigliotti said he would not seek an extension to his five-year contract with the district. At the time, Mr. Vigliotti said that he didn't have plans to end his 13-year career at General Brown and that he hadn't sought other superintendent positions. Under the terms of his contract, Mr. Vigliotti is appointed as General Brown's superintendent until June 30, 2014.

According to the Buffalo News, the other finalists for the Newfane superintendent post are John Hoar, principal of Barker High School, and Robin Zymroz, superintendent of the Akron Central School District. The three candidates will meet with teachers, parents, administrators and students next week.

If Mr. Vigliotti left General Brown, he would be the second superintendent in as many years to leave the north country to take a job in Niagara County. Former Carthage Central School District Superintendent Carl H. Militello left in 2008 to take a job as the superintendent of the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District.
