BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Nat Hennig staked Ferris State to a two-goal lead early in the third period and the Bulldogs went on to win, 4-2, over St. Lawrence in a nonconference men's hockey game on Friday.
The Bulldogs (2-1-0) never trailed, despite St. Lawrence threatening twice.
Garrett Thompson put the game out of reach against the Saints (0-1-2), deflecting a goal over sprawled SLU goalie Matt Weninger with 5:26 to play to give Ferris State a 4-2 edge.
Matthew Kirzinger opened the scoring for Ferris State as he scored on an extra-attacker goal just 2:29 into the game, taking a pass from Todd Pococke and sliding the puck between Weninger and the post.
A new, power-play rule meant Ferris State kept the extra attacker for the remainder of the St. Lawrence penalty. The Saints penalty kill didn't allow a second score with the man advantage.
Junior Jacob Drewiske tied the game for the Saints at 16:15 of the first period as he took a pass from Rick Carden and scored between the post and goalie Pat Nagle's pads to make it 1-1. Sophomore Matt Dyer also assisted on the score.
“We gave it a pretty good effort against a good team,” Saints coach Joe Marsh said. “We had to play some players in some different positions and went with seven defensemen, but I thought we were competitive and we were in it right down to the end.”
Ferris State regained the lead on a three-on-one break at 6:12 of the second period when Cory Kane picked up a loose puck and scored, catching Weninger leaning to defend a pass. It put Ferris State in the lead for good.
Hennig scored the game-winner at 2:01 of the third when he rifled a shot in off a rebound from Derek Graham's shot.
The Saints were still in it when freshman Greg Carey picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and sent it to freshman Riley Austin. He faked a shot and snapped a wrister through to make it a 3-2 game with his first of the year.
But the Saints couldn't find the equalizer and Ferris iced it when Thompson tipped the tumbling puck off the block over Weninger at 14:34.
