Christmas is a busy season, but also one that invites reflection on the things that touch us deeply.

Whether it is wrapping presents, sending cards or attending a Christmas party, we find ourselves trying to connect with each other in a meaningful way. We value our relationships.

People travel far to spend the holiday with loved ones. One of the poignant songs of the season is "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Home is a good place to be.

Charitable gifts and acts abound. It is heartwarming to see how people reach out to the poor, the sick, the grieving and those who are in any kind of trouble. That's the Christmas spirit.

The music is inspiring. Locally, we have experienced so many wonderful Christmas concerts this year — at schools, in churches and concert halls.

Decorations brighten the wintry landscape. Festive trees beam their welcome. Children glow with excitement and anticipation. 'Tis the season to be jolly.

The Gospels tell the Christmas story, of how God sent his son, "a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord," to live among us. His arrival as a baby "wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger" was heralded by angels and witnessed by shepherds.

The ancient story, its message of hope, love and peace invite us to open our hearts to a deeper faith, a larger purpose.

And though it's been said, many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you!
