The parents of Alexandra C. Smith and Brendan T. Dirrane, both of South Boston, Mass., announce the couple's engagement.

Miss Smith, daughter of Mark Smith and Susan Tague-Smith, Watertown, is a 2004 graduate of Watertown High School and a 2007 graduate of Boston University with a bachelor's degree in English and women's studies. She is pursuing a master's degree in clinical social work at Simmons College, Boston.

Mr. Dirrane, son of Michael and Sharon Dirrane, South Boston, is a 2007 graduate of North Carolina State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in history. He is pursuing a master's degree in business administration at University of Massachusetts, Boston, and is a financial planner at Massachusetts Water Resource Authority, Boston.

A March 5 wedding is planned.
