Watertown

The Watertown City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday to talk about the status of sewer improvements that have been completed on Gaffney Drive and changing demands of growing development in that area of the city.

Ogdensburg City School District

The board of education will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria at Ogdensburg Free Academy. The board is expected to continue budget discussions and several personnel moves are also on the agenda.

St. Lawrence County

St. Lawrence County Legislature's Services Committee meets at 5:30 p.m., 48 Court St., Court House, Canton, to discuss asking the state to maintain funding for the Youth Bureau and eliminate competitive bid funding, and to consider joining the Adirondack Partnership.

Courts

Jury selection is set to begin Monday afternoon in Jefferson County Court in the trial of a Calcium man accused of attempted murder for allegedly shooting two people in March 2010.

Eric K. Cruz, 24, faces two counts of second-degree attempted murder and eight additional counts for allegedly shooting James Burrus and Claudia Jacques with a long gun in Calcium on March 14 and placing Jessica Retherford at grave risk of death by shooting a 12-gauge shotgun into her house on James Street in Calcium while she was inside.

State budget

Well, folks, we're really hitting the final stretch here. Come heck or high water, there's going to be a budget by April 2, it seems. Citing "administration sources," Fred Dicker's got a story this morning about Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's demands for more moolah.

A government shutdown, Mr. Dicker said, could be imminent. That means Gov. Andrew Cuomo could impose his budget in one giant extender on April 2.

I asked Assemblywoman Addie Russell whether she'd go to the wall for a millionaire's tax — that is, risk a government shutdown. I didn't get a direct answer, but given the popularity of the governor, it doesn't sound likely.

Feds

A hearing is scheduled today on prices of cigarettes around military bases and a comparison of prices off-post.

Sports

Nothing to see here. No big stories or anything. Especially not March Madness. Isn't that already over? Well, it is to me, and my bracket is busted. As I've said, I had Syracuse going all the way (picking with my heart, not my wallet).

The only thing we have left to root for is Jimmer Fredette, a Glens Falls native and could-be national player of the year for BYU, which is in the Sweet 16.
