VILLANOVA, Pa. — Jovan Miller set up a JoJo Marasco goal with six seconds remaining as the top-ranked Syracuse men's lacrosse team escaped its first loss of the season with a 5-4 victory over No. 7 Villanova on Saturday night.
Marasco's goal came on a quick, left-handed shot from the top of the crease.
Kevin Cunningham scored for the Wildcats with 57 seconds left, to tie the game at four goals apiece.
Jeremy Thompson won the ensuing faceoff for the Orange (7-0 overall, 2-0 Big East), and got the ball to Miller behind the goal. Miller dodged past his defender, which allowed Marasco to get open for the game-winner.
Marasco scored two goals overall, and Miller finished with one goal and one assist for the Orange. Stephen Keogh and Kevin Drew each added a goal.
C.J. Small scored a pair of goals to lead Villanova (7-2, 0-1).
Syracuse goalie John Galloway won his 51st game, matching Princeton's Scott Bacigalupo for the NCAA Division I record.
