Ogdensburg native Jake Morley was named the captain of the Clarkson University men's hockey team for the 2011-12 season at the team's annual awards banquet Saturday night.
Morley was an assistant captain last year and will replace classmate Mark Borowiecki, who left early to sign a contract with the National Hockey League's Ottawa Senators.
Morley, a junior, also was given the Knight Club Award, which goes to a player who made a significant contribution to the team, achieved academically and was a role model for teammates and the youth of the community. He finished with seven goals and 15 assists last season.
Clarkson's assistant captains next year will be junior Nick Tremblay and freshman Ben Sexton.
Goalie Paul Karpowich, a junior, was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player, an award named after Bill Harrison. Karpowich set a single-season school record for saves, with 1,053 and had a .912 save percentage.
Senior Bfandon DeFazio was given the Mike Morrison Coaches' Award for teamwork, hustle and dedication. He scored 14 goals with 12 assists last year and is now playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League.
Senior Mike Pizzo won the Richmond Unsung Hero Award, which goes to a player who is unselfish and excels as a student and athlete.
Senior Lauri Tuohimaa won the Fran Neragin Award, which goes to a play who excels in sportsmanship and academics.
