Accounting for Literature Nuts

This is a day I've been waiting for.

Today, April 4, 2011, marks the occasion of the Watertown's Flower Memorial Library's inclusion into the e-book lending club. As a Flower Memorial Library patron, that means I can now borrow e-books for free. As long as I have a compatible e-reader.

My husband bought a Kindle for me for Christmas 2009 because if there's one thing my fickle brain has clung to loving all these years (besides writing), it's reading.

I don't, however, have a lot of time to go to the library, pick a worthy book, then return said book to the library fully read and on time. Overdue fees haunt me more surely than do my children in search of snacks. That's one reason an e-reader is so appealing to me. It is far more convenient for my lifestyle.

I use my Kindle at every opportunity. But since I'm a mom to two little ones AND I work from home only as often as I can find work, I don't 1) have a lot of money to spend on books, nor do I 2) have a lot of time to spend reading books.

One of those problems, I was delighted to discover last fall, would be solved when MY LOCAL LIBRARY got into the e-book lending game.

Alas, two more of my favorite things (free books + technology) would not be so easily combined.

Kindle – an e-reader powered by the book selling leviathan – doesn't support the e-pub format, the format used all e-book lending services. Meaning if you want to read a book on your Kindle, you gotta buy your book from Amazon. Oof.

When I found this out, I kicked and screamed and actually shed a few tears. I couldn't justify spending $150+ on a second e-reader for the sole purpose of borrowing library e-books.

So how did I end up with two?
