Applications for a program to support family caregivers of post-9-11 veterans opened with strong response.
In the week after May 9, more than 625 families received assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act of 2010, according to a news release.
VA officials want more families to apply for the benefit that, for those eligible, includes a stipend, mental health services and access to health insurance.
"We are off to a good start having helped hundreds to apply, but we know there are thousands more who will qualify and need to apply today," Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki said in a news release. "I encourage eligible Veterans and their Family Caregivers to apply now to receive the benefits they have earned."
A major part of the benefit is training. This month, the VA partnered with Easter Seals — an organization that helps the disabled — which will provide training to families who are caring for a veteran.
James E. Williams Jr., the organization's CEO, said in a statement that he was honored to help veterans and families.
"Easter Seals is proud to share our expertise and knowledge with this important group of Family Caregivers, taking care of loved ones who returned home with serious injuries after their post-9-11 service to our nation," he said.
A designated caregiver within the family will receive most benefits, but additional family members can receive entitlements that include training and paid lodging and meals during travel related to the veteran's care.
Stipend amounts will be based on how much care the veteran needs, and the amount will be comparable to what a home health aide in the community receives.
In preparation for the program, the VA hired full-time caregiver coordinators at each of its 153 medical centers, including the one in Syracuse.
The VA's caregiver hotline is 1 (855) 260-3274 and is a resource providing help with the application as well as answers to questions and referrals.
