Graduates:Ninteen north country residents graduated from theJefferson Leadership Instituteon June 9 at a ceremony held at the Black River Valley Club, Watertown. The JLI, established in 1991, is sponsored by Northern Federal Credit Union and Samaritan Medical Center. the nine-month leadership development program has more than 400 alumni. Participants are financially sponsored by their employers.

Potsdam
Winner: Kayla Rae Phillips,daughter of Nicole Pitcher, Potsdam, and Brian Phillips, Potsdam, will be a state finalist in theNational American Miss New York Pageanton July 14 through 16 at Hyatt Regency, Rochester. Kayla is participating in the pre-teen division of the competition.
She participates in show choir, chorus, soccer, basketball, softball, All-County Chorus, and plays the trombone in band. She also enjoys swimming, fishing, camping, dancing and singing. Kayla most recently volunteered at the Parishville Ladies' Auxiliary's recently Italian Dinner as one of her community service projects.

Honored: Mary L. Jone,fourth-grade teacher and administrative intern at Chateaugay Central School, received the $1,000 Ross C. Hudson Graduate Study Grant from the Northern Zone of New York State Retired Teachers Association at the association's semi-annual meeting in May at Erin's Isle, Brasher Falls.

Honored: Joseph Bernier,a SUNY Potsdam anthropology major, received the 2011 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence on April 5 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Albany.
Mr. Bernier was the leadership and events coordinator in the Office of Campus Life and a member of Alumni Association Board of Trustees, representing Emerging Leaders.
Evans Mills, Watertown
Honored: Christopher D. Coles,Evans Mills, andGunjan V. Udeshi,Watertown, were named to the All-New York Academic Team for Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for community colleges. To be chosen, students must receive a minimum grade point average of 3.25.
Mr. Coles graduated from Jefferson Community College, Watertown, in May, with an associate degree in humanities and social sciences. He is president of JCC's Tau Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and completed JCC's Honors Program and Honors Seminar. He is a member of student government, where he served on the advisory board and budget/finance committee, the Street Team, Faculty-Student Association Board of Directors, and represented students on the Honors Committee. He plans to transfer to SUNY Cortland to pursue a degree in physical education.
Ms. Udeshi graduated from Jefferson Community College, Watertown, in December, with an associate degree in business administration. She was vice president of Tau Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and in April, she received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. She was a campus orientation guide and a member of the business club and Lady Cannoneers intercollegiate basketball team, where she served as one of three captains.
Ms. Udeshi volunteered on campus with the biannual blood drive, cultural fair and end of year banquet, and off campus with a local retirement community, child care center, Habitat for Humanity and Cornell Cooperative Extension. She is a student of Binghamton University, where she is studying finance.
Lisbon
Honored: Tammy L. Carr,SUNY Canton physical plant secretary 1, received the2011 SUNY Canton College Council's Employee Recognition Awardat the college's Recognition Day on May 26.
Mrs. Carr graduated in 1987 from SUNY Canton with an associate's degree in secretarial science. He joined the physical plant soon after as a stenographer and was promoted to keyboard specialist 2 in December 1996. She was promoted to her current position in 2003.
Mrs. Carr resides in Lisbon with her husband, Rick. The couple has a son, Andrew, Lisbon, and a daughter, Amanda, and granddaughter, Alexia, both of Norfolk.
Ogdensburg
Honored: Melinda Miller,SUNY Canton director of counseling, recently received the2011 Excellence in College Service Awardfrom SUNY Canton's College Council.
Mrs. Miller joined the college staff in October 1996 as coordinator for substance abuse and prevention, was named a senior counselor in August 1998, was promoted to interim director in August 2006, and took the permanent director position in March 2007. Previously, she was a parent enrichment coordinator and counselor at St. Lawrence/Lewis County BOCES and a mental health rehabilitation counselor for the Seaway House, Ogdensburg.
At SUNY Canton, she serves as adviser for the Peer Educators and the Commuter Club and teaches two sections of "Alcohol and Drugs in Society." Mrs. Miller is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American College Counseling Association.
She received a bachelor's degree from SUNY Potsdam in 1991, a master's degree in counseling and human development from St. Lawrence University, Canton, in 1993, and a certificate of advanced studies in counseling and development from SLU in 2005.
Mrs. Miller lives in Ogdensburg with her husband, Eric, and their two children, Jordan and Madison.
