The buzz has always been there: Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schneiderman do not like each other, according to the rumor mill.
In the wake of a Wall Street Journal article that laid bare some of those hurt feelings, Mr. Schneiderman tried to tamp down the controversy.
He said at a presser in Watertown today that he gets along with Mr. Cuomo perfectly fine, thank you very much.
He got into a little bit more detail at an editorial board meeting with the Watertown Daily Times.
Mr. Schneiderman, a state senator before he was elected to the AG post, got into a discussion with the publisher, John B. Johnson, over what's more dysfunctional: Albany or Washington (a race to the bottom, indeed).
Mr. Johnson's position was that Albany ain't so bad compared to Washington. Mr. Schneiderman's was that this only became true this year — and he gave Mr. Cuomo a lot of the credit for it.
“The governor has come in with, I'm not going to say a baseball bat, because that brings up other memories, but he has this visceral disgust at... the institutions he grew up admiring, and maybe he has an idealized view of the government during the (Gov. Hugh) Carey and (Gov. Mario) Cuomo years, but he's got some things rolling. ... The new ethics bill is going to help a lot. Stuff that's just, the basic stuff of government, like Article X, the sense that you have to do your job. It's really remarkable.”
So, there's that.
