HEUVELTON Featuring a host of activities from carnival games and musical performances to a parade down Main Street, the Luck of the Irish Labor Day weekend celebration offers something for the whole family to enjoy.
The festival, which will feature about 50 groups in Saturdays parade, gives the community a chance to celebrate the villages Irish heritage, organizer Shirley A. Todd said.
By tradition, the festivities will kick off with a 4-mile run/walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, with registration at 7:30 a.m. The $10 entrance fee includes a T-shirt, and trophies will be awarded to the top male and female and medals for age-group winners.
Highlights Saturday will include a fishing derby and a canoe race for children on the Oswegatchie River, a cake walk, contests for nail-pounding and free-throw shooting, and Dr. John P. Jack Zehs pet contest, in which pets will be judged in a number of categories. A baby contest, with awards for the chubbiest cheeks, nicest smile and best Irish outfit, also will be featured.
Sundays parade will start at the Old DeKalb Junction intersection with Route 812 and end near the school on Main Street. Awards will be given to the top floats before the parade.
Following the parade will be musical performances during the evening by the Acoustic Brothers of Madrid, who will play hits from the 1950s and 60s, and the band Starlights with WD-40. The evening will close with a 25-minute fireworks presentation planned for 8:30 p.m.
Food and craft items will be on sale throughout the weekend, as well as Luck of the Irish T-shirts at $7 for children and $8 for adults.
To raise money for the festival, buttons will be sold for $1 each during the weekend for a chance to win prizes of $100, $50 and $25. Winning numbers will be announced Sept. 9. A raffle also will be held, with tickets on sale at seven for $5, five for $3, three for $2 or $1 each.
Volunteers still are needed to set up for the festival, Mrs. Todd said, noting that more than 100 people participated last year. Those interested in volunteering or registering a float can call her at 393-5684 or Gail Kerr at 535-7202.
