NEW HARTFORD Abel Miller rushed for 163 yards on 17 carries and scored on two, long third-quarter touchdowns as Carthage opened the season with a 28-18 win over New Hartford Friday night in a Section 3 Class A National game.
Milles touchdowns came on lenghty runs of 54 and 55 yards, while Josh Britton added touchdown rushes of 68 and 29 yards and finished with 147 yards on 11 carries for Carthage (1-0).
New Hartford (0-1) managed two fourth-quarter scores by Dave Hans and Derek German, but couldnt overcome the large deficit.
Whitesboro 41, Indian River 29
Host Whitesboro used four unanswered touchdowns between the third and fourth quarter to take control of a Class A National opener in Marcy.
Steve Almond ran for two of the touchdowns, including a 40-yard rush in the fourth quarter that proved to be the clincher, for Whitesboro (1-0).
Darrius Bryant highlighted Indian Rivers offense with a 60-yard touchdown run, and Rayshan-Shakur Clark added a 98-yard kick return for Indian River (0-1).
Sandy Creek 38, Port Byron 28
Jared Soule scored three second-half touchdown en route to a 238-yard rushing performance, propelling the Comets to a Class D West Division comeback win over the Panthers in Port Byron.
Soule had touchdown runs of 5, 27 and 42 yards, while Wyatt Bush scored on a 12-yard and 19-yard run for Sandy Creek (1-0). The Comets defense, led by Ethan Yalchs 11 tackles and fumble recovery, held Port Byron (0-1) scoreless in the second half after trailing 28-13 at halftime.
John Kudla had three touchdown runs for Port Byron.
cazenovia 41, south jefferson 22
Andree Vogl, Darian Smith and Jake Wilson each ran for two touchdowns as the Lakers downed the Spartans in a Class B East season-opener at Adams.
Wilson ran for 107 yards on nine carries as Cazenovia (1-0) dominated on the ground.
Mitch Modlin racked up 196 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns for South Jeff (0-1), including an 85-yard kickoff return.
Lowville 41, Canton 6
Five different players scored as the host Red Raiders routed the Golden Bears with 26 points in the second quarter of a nonleague game in Lowville.
Jeremy Kinglsey, Matt Giver and Jeremy Johnson each had a rushing touchdown for Lowville (1-0). Jarrett Mellnitz started the scoring with a 52-yard punt return early in the first quarter. Lowvilles Connor Dykeman also recovered a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter.
Canton (0-1) managed one score on Richard Martins 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.
