SYRACUSE An indictment unsealed in federal court Wednesday charges a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer with one count of embezzling government funds.
Todd L. Tyo, 46, Heuvelton, is accused of embezzling more than $1,000 from March to August that came into his possession as part of his employment at the Alexandria Bay Port of Entry, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard Southwick.
Mr. Tyo, a 15-year veteran, was put on administrative leave Aug. 10 and it is unknown whether his employment will be terminated in light of the indictment.
If found guilty, Mr. Tyo could face up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of $250,000. He was released on his own recognizance.
Mr. Southwick declined to specify the amount and how the money was embezzled.
