Our Martha Ellen is reporting that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo is throwing his 70-percent approval rating behind St. Lawrence County clerk Gavin Regan in his election bid against Republican Mary Lou Rupp.
Mr. Cuomo appointed Mr. Regan, his fellow Democrat, after former clerk Patty Ritchie ascended to her new position in the state legislature's upper chamber.
Mrs. Ritchie's people aren't going to be happy with this turn of events. They're strongly backing Mrs. Rupp, Mrs. Ritchie's longtime deputy, in her Nov. 8 bid.
As I've speculated before, I didn't think any north country endorsements from Mr. Cuomo were likely, but I felt this one was the most likely. It's sort of nice to be sort of right.
I've contacted Mrs. Ritchie's people on this, and will update if they have anything to say.
Graham Wise, Mrs. Ritchie's chief of staff, had this to say about the endorsement:
"It comes as no surprise, given the fact that the governor appointed Mr. Regan. Although Senator Ritchie and the governor have agreed on many things this past year, this is not one of them. Senator Ritchie wholeheartedly supports Mary Lou Rupp as the next county clerk."
