The Jefferson County Board of Elections is counting absentee ballots and write-in votes race by race, starting with two of the closest election night contests.
The gap has widened for the leader in the town of Orleans supervisor race. Republican Kevin Rarick leads Democrat Jay Burrows, 215-211. On election night, Mr. Rarick led Mr. Burrows by a single vote. The gap quadrupled after most absentee ballots were counted.
Mr. Burrows still could come back, but the prospects are dim and getting dimmer. The Board of Elections issued 51 absentee ballots, and 41 have come back. Absentee ballots could still arrive by mail tomorrow; military ballots can arrive as late as next week.
In District 6 of the Jefferson County Legislature, Democrat Michael Astafan's lead has been cut to five, according to a count by the Board of Elections. He leads Republican Jonathan Hirschey, 358-353. Mr. Astafan led by nine votes on election night.
In that race, the Board of Elections issued 67 ballots, and 43 have been received, leaving 14 possible, but by no means certain, votes that could be counted, according to Board of Elections officials.
