CARTHAGE — Martin Thot, 75, of 36533 NYS RT. 3, Carthage, passed December 10, 2011 at his home where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. Wed., Dec. 14th at the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thurs. Dec. 15th at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Black River Cemetery.

He was born on May 5, 1936, in Transylvania, Romania, son of Johann and Maria Horeth Thot. He and his family moved to the US in May of 1950. He received his education in Austria and attended Watertown High School.

He served in the US Air Force for six years, during which time he received his GED.

Mr. Thot married Patricia N. FitzGerald, of Watertown, on March 1, 1959 at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Frederick Vogt officiating.

He worked at Champion International, formerly known as St. Regis Paper Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1998. He also worked for Gray's Flower Shop for ten years, delivering flowers.

Mr. Thot was a member of the Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1950. He served there as past superintendent of Sunday School and Past Church Councilman. He is currently an associated member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Orleans Four Corners.

He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Carthage Elks Lodge #1762, member of the Carthage American Legion Post 789, he enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan.

Among his survivors are his wife Patricia N. Thot, Carthage; his oldest daughter and her husband, Wanda M. and Steven M. Minkler, Evans Mills; his youngest daughter Penny A. Ellis and family; a grandson, Bryan M. Minkler; a great grandson, Tanner Ellis; three sisters and a brother in law, Maria Thot Horeth, Christina and Michael Schneider, Youngstown, Ohio, Rosina Allen, Carthage and his loving and loyal dog, Jasper.

A brother Johann Thot died before him.
