The two key figures in one of major league baseball's most memorable on-field gaffes will appear together as part of the Watertown Wizards' annual hot stove dinner next month, the Wizards have announced.
Former New York Met Mookie Wilson and former Boston Red Sox Bill Buckner are scheduled to speak on Feb. 3 at the Jefferson County Exhibition Hall. A meet-and-greet is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by a dinner and the former players' appearance.
Wilson delivered the grounder down the first base line that rolled through the legs of Buckner for an error that scored the Mets' Ray Knight with the winning run in the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. The Mets had been down to their final out and on the verge of elimination before the rally. New York went on to beat Boston in Game 7 and win their most recent World Series title. The Red Sox had been attempting their first Series title since 1918.
Wilson and Buckner have appeared together at various venues and charity events in the last year. Last October was the 25th anniversary of the error that went down in baseball lore.
Tickets for the Feb. 3 event are on sale for $40 (VIP) and $25 (general admission). Tickets may be purchased by emailing the Wizards at watertownwizards@hotmail.com or by calling the Wizards at 315-212-9799.
Last offseason, the Wizards brought former major league pitcher Tommy John to speak at its hot stove dinner.
