Unemployment rises in north country

Unemployment rose in the three north country counties from November to December, bringing the rate up to levels at the end of 2010.

In Jefferson County, unemployment in December rose to 10.1 percent, from 9.4 percent in November. In December 2010, unemployment stood at 10.3 percent.

In St. Lawrence County, unemployment in December rose to 10 percent, from 9.3 percent in November. In December 2010, unemployment stood at 10.3 percent.

In Lewis County, unemployment in December rose to 9.9 percent, from 8.6 percent in November. In December 2010, unemployment stood at 10 percent.

The numbers are not seasonally adjusted.

The north country has the highest unemployment rate anywhere in the state outside of the Bronx (12.4 percent). Oswego County had the highest unemployment rate outside of New York City, at 10.2 percent.
