It was sad and stunning news a year ago when reports surfaced that a member of Congress had been shot in Arizona.

Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords survived the shooting that left her with a severe brain injury. But six people who went to hear the Democratic congresswoman speak at the Tucson event were killed and 12 others, besides Ms. Giffords, were injured.

The alleged gunman, Jared Loughner, 23, remains behind bars while officials debate whether he is mentally competent to stand trial.

A tragedy. Violence inflicted on innocent and unsuspecting people. Six individuals, including a child, lost the precious gift of life for no reason.

The event shocked the country and sparked discussion about lowering the tone of political rhetoric and renewed pleas for political adversaries to work together.

Eulogizing the six who were killed, President Obama said: “If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost.”

Out of terrible events come examples of courage, hope and renewal as well. Congresswoman Giffords has shown such courage, as has her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. Rep. Giffords announced the other day that she would not run for re-election but needed to focus on her recovery. She formally resigned Wednesday, and an election for her seat will be held in June.

Speaking to constituents on a video, she said: “We can do so much more by working together. I don’t remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice.”

“I’m getting better,” she said. “Every day my spirit is high. I will return, and we will work together for Arizona and this great country.”

She intends to finish the event interrupted by violence a year ago by meeting privately with some constituents, USA Today reported.

The congresswoman has come a long way in a year and Americans wish her a full recovery.
