Outburst sparks Clarkson past Cornell

POTSDAM — A four-goal outburst in the second period helped spark the Clarkson University women’s hockey team to a 5-3 upset of second-ranked Cornell in an ECAC Hockey game Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson (16-7-5 overall, 10-4-2 conference) scored the first three goals of the game and handed Cornell just its third loss of the season.

Jamie Lee Rattray started the spurt with a power-play goal 97 seconds into the second period. Juana Baribeau scored two goals in the period and Danielle Skirrow also scored. Baribeau clinched the game with an empty-net goal with 12 seconds left for a hat trick.

Rebecca Johnston, Erin Barley-Maloney and Chelsea Karpenko scored for the Big Red (19-3, 14-2).

ST. LAWRENCE 6, COLGATE 0

Carmen MacDonald made 20 saves to lead SLU past the Raiders (8-18-1, 3-12-1) in an ECAC Hockey game in Canton.

Rylee Smith scored three goals and assisted on two others for the Saints (15-8-4, 9-5-2). Karell Emard, Jacqueline Wand and Kelly Sabatine also scored for the Saints.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

ST. LAWRENCE 70, BARD 57

Ralph Temgoua led the Saints (10-8, 6-4) with 22 points in a win over Bard in a Liberty League contest in Annandale-on-Hudson.

Terry Parham scored 13 points and Kyle Miller and Brady Condlin each added 11. Matt Shubert led Bard (3-13, 1-7) with 21 points.

CLARKSON 76, VASSAR 73

Felix Llanos and Marques Charlton each scored 19 points as Clarkson (13-4, 6-2) edged the Brewers in a Liberty League game in Poughkeepsie.

John Coleman scored 17 points and Tyler Barron added 15. Johnny Mrlik led Vassar (6-11, 2-6) with 19 points and Jon Herzog tossed in 18.

SUNY OSWEGO 76, SUNY POTSDAM 56

Hayden Ward tallied 23 points as SUNY Oswego (15-3, 11-0) past the Bears in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Sean Michele and Chad Burridge both scored 15 for the Lakers and Conor Monaghan added 10. Curtis Pierce led the Bears (4-14, 2-9) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Rob Duquette added 10 points.

SUNY CANTON 72, MAINE-AUGUSTA 55

The Kangaroos (11-6) defeated host Maine-Augusta for the team’s third straight win in a nonconference game. No other information was provided.

JEFFERSON CC 69, BROOME CC 57

Jabriel Blue tallied 30 points and 10 rebounds as the Cannoneers took a Mid-State Conference game from the Hornets in Binghamton.

Tom Kelso added 20 points and 10 rebounds for Jefferson CC (12-11, 5-2). The Cannoneers are now tied for first in the conference.

Jason Givens paced Broome CC with 18 points and 18 rebounds.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

VASSAR 74, CLARKSON 52

Cydni Matsuoka scored 16 points and snagged 11 rebounds as Vassar (10-7, 4-4) pounded the Golden Knights in a Liberty League game in Poughkeepsie.

Nyah Berg scored 13 points and Kristyn Tempora added 12.

Raeanne Clabeaux led Clarkson (7-9, 2-6) with 15 points and Carey Turner added 13.

ST. LAWRENCE 70, BARD 33

Kara McDuffee scored 16 points and Katie Abramski and Maddy Wetterhahn each added 12 as the Saints (14-4, 10-0) cruised past Bard in a Liberty League game in Annandale-on-Hudson.

Liz Freud led Bard (1-17, 0-9) with nine points and 14 rebounds.

SUNY OSWEGO 58, SUNY POTSDAM 50

Kari Kipper scored 22 points for SUNY Oswego (10-8, 5-6) in a SUNYAC win over the Bears in Potsdam.

Kayla Ryan added 20 points for the Lakers. Jessica Kouzan scored 11 points to lead the Bears (4-14, 2-9).

MAINE-AUGUSTA 54, SUNY CANTON 49

Kaitlin Myers scored 21 points for SUNY Canton (4-13) in a nonconference loss at Maine-Augusta. Myers made three 3-point baskets for the Kangaroos.

BROOME CC 51, JEFFERSON CC 43

Alyssa Ransburg connected for 19 points to lead the Hornets to victory over the Cannoneers in a Mid-State Athletic Conference game at Binghamton.

Natalie Wright contributed 11 points, and Jennifer Celiberti added 10 points for Broome Community College (8-12, 4-3).

For JCC, Joelle Percy and Morgan Kiernan each produced 17 points. Sarah Maxon grabbed nine rebounds, while Percy and Amber Dibble pulled down eight rebounds apiece for Jefferson (5-16, 3-4).

INDOOR TRACK

BELL EARNS TWO TOP TENS

SLU’s Eliza Bell finished tied for eighth in the high jump and was ninth in the triple jump at the Boston University Invitational Friday. The meet consisted mostly of NCAA Division I schools. Jamal Samaroo led SLU’s men with an 11th-place finish in the triple jump.

SWIMMING

BEARS SPLIT

SUNY Potsdam’s men defeated St. Michael’s 167-121 while the women lost 143-118 in a meet in Potsdam.

Richie Zimmerman led the Bears with wins in the 200-meter freestyle, 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley. Taylor Xander won the 50 and 200 breaststrokes and Ryan Wentz won the 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly.

Liz Ringer won the 50 and 200 butterflies for the women and Laurissa Coombs won the 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley.

HARTWICK SWEEPS SAINTS

Hartwick dominated a meet in Canton, winning the men’s competition 136-90 and defeating the St. Lawrence University women 166-56. Kirby Kaylor won the 100 breaststroke for the SLU men and Elizabeth Canne won the 100 breaststroke for the Saints women.

SKIING

CAREER BEST FOR SLU’S TERKO

Adam Terko finished in 16th place, a career best, for the SLU men’s nordic team at the New Hampshire Carnival in Jackson, N.H. Terko finished the 20-kilometer race in 50 minutes, 35.8 seconds. Caroline Carpenter finished in 14th place for the Saint women.

Caroline Berry led SLU’s women’s Alpine team with a 19th-place finish.
