Honored: Julie Dziewisz received the New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages James A. Lydon Distinguished Service Award at its annual state conference on Oct. 28 in Melville.
Ms. Dziewisz recently retired from the NYS TESOL executive board, where she served 10 years, and as editor of Idiom, the 28-page quarterly publication. She retired as assistant professor in 2007 from Jefferson Community College, Watertown, and is the co-author of Critical Reading, Critical Thinking: Focusing on Contemporary Issues, due out from Pearson Longman in 2012.

Honored: Alumni Charles W. Ayer Jr. and Eileen Whelley were recently voted in as members of the Potsdam College Foundation Board.
Mr. Ayer graduated in 1975 from SUNY Potsdam with a bachelors degree in secondary education and concentration in English literature, and in 1977 with a masters degree in accounting from Long Island University. He has spent 35 years in corporate finance for Pratt & Whitney Division of United Technologies Corp. Mr. Ayer lives in Vernon, Conn., with his wife, Claudia Thomas Ayer. The couple has three adult children.
Ms. Whelley, graduated in 1976 from SUNY Potsdam with a bachelors degree in sociology and later earned a masters degree from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. She is an executive vice president for the Hartford Financial Services Group, Hartford, Conn. Ms. Whelley was named SUNY Potsdams Distinguished Alumni Speaker in April. She lives in Wilton, Conn., with her husband, Don, and their two children.
Appointed: Susan Stebbins, anthropology professor, has been named special assistant to the president for diversity. Ms. Stebbins teaches courses focusing on American Indians and gender, has served as director of U.S. and global studies at SUNY Potsdam for more than 10 years, and served as the college affirmative action officer for seven years.
Honored: Love is Everywhere: Selected Songs of Margaret Ruthven Lang, Vol. 1, by tenor Donald George and pianist Lucy Mauro, was named one of 2011s Best Recordings of the Year by MusicWeb International. Mr. George, an associate professor at SUNY Potsdam, and Lucy Maura, an assistant professor at West Virginia University, Morganstown, W.Va., teamed up on the CD to feature music by Ms. Lang, the first American woman composer to have works performed by major symphony orchestras in the States. The pairs second volume will be released in February.
