Ralph E. Carpenter, 88, of 1371 Sunset Ridge, Watertown, passed February 7, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Arrangements are with the Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial with military honors will be 1 p.m. Friday February 10th at the Fairview Cemetery in Rodman.

Born on August 30, 1923, in Watertown, son of Ralph E. and Florence C. Walker Carpenter he was a member of the Watertown High School class of 1941. Following school he worked for his grandfather who owned the E.B. Carpenter Well Drilling Inc., Watertown.

He then entered the US Army in 1943 and served in the European Theatre during World War II with the 355th Engineer Regiment. He was honorably discharged in 1945 and received five campaign medals.

Mr. Carpenter returned to work with his grandfather and later owned Carpenter Well Drilling Inc., Glen Park. He was then employed at Fort Drum, retiring as superintendent of the water department in 1986. Following retirement, Mr. Carpenter was a consultant for Pearson and Timmerman Inc.

He served as president of the Empire State Water Well Drillers Association for three years. Before moving to Watertown, he was town of Pamelia justice and mayor of Glen Park.

He is a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 61, an honorary member of the Glen Park Fire Department, member of the Sackets Harbor sportsman club and he enjoyed boating for many years.

He married Frances D. Brown on November 30, 1947 at Universalist Church. Mrs. Carpenter retired from the House of the Good Samaritan after 40 years as a registered nurse.

Among his survivors are his wife, Frances B. Carpenter, Watertown; three sons and two daughters in law, Rick L. and Deborah M. Carpenter, Watertown, Dale R. Carpenter and his companion, Renee Archambault, Sackets Harbor, David E. and Debra K. Carpenter, Colo.; a daughter and her companion, Judy A. Carpenter and Richard Sherry, Watertown and Roanoke, VA; three sisters, Lois Hudgins and Constance Hyneman both New Port Richey, FL, Ernestine Stanton, Ontario, NY; a brother, Terry Carpenter, New Port Richey, FL; 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
