Sex abuse allegations against two teachers at a Los Angeles elementary school have caused the district to replace the entire staff.
School officials closed the Miramonte Elementary School for two days this week in preparation for reopening the building today with a new staff of 128 employees.
The former employees will stay on the payroll, grade students papers and do administrative work, the district said. But they are not likely to return until next school year.
Superintendent John Deasy said it was necessary to replace the staff to restore a calm and stable environment for students and teachers. Sheriffs detectives are interviewing employees and looking to see if others were victimized.
Last week, third-grade teacher Mark Berndt, who had taught at the school for 30 years, was charged with sexually molesting 23 students. He had been fired last year when the district heard of the investigation. A few days later, another teacher, Martin Springer, was arrested on suspicion of molesting students.
Lawsuits are being filed against the district. The housecleaning is intended to give a fresh start while the matter is thoroughly investigated.
Educating students while assuring them that their school is safe and stable will be no small feat. School officials have their work cut out, as do parents.
Yet much can be overcome when people work together for the good of the children.
