Matt Doheny, a businessman who is vying for the north country's congressional seat, will headline a fundraiser for a fellow Republican, Assemblyman Marc Butler.
The Feb. 23 event will take place in Ilion, in Herkimer County.
Two things of note, and they're both to do with redistricting: Herkimer County isn't part of the congressional district that Mr. Doheny is aiming to represent — currently held by Rep. Bill Owens, D-Plattsburgh. But redistricting could change that. The 23rd needs to grow by about 50,000 residents. A part of Mr. Butler's Assembly district is in Fulton County, which provides some overlap between the 117th and the 23rd.
And Mr. Butler doesn't represent our part of the north country — at least not yet. A proposed redistricting map would bring Mr. Butler into several towns in St. Lawrence County, in a district that resembles a woodpecker on a tree stump.
Here is the invitation to Mr. Butler's fundraiser.
