Sackets Harbor boys, Thousand Islands girls earn No. 1 seeds

Two Frontier League champions, the unbeaten Sackets Harbor boys and the Thousand Islands girls, earned No. 1 seeds Sunday as the Section 3 basketball field was unveiled.

The Patriots (18-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, are the top seed in Class D-2 boys. They will open sectional play with a home quarterfinal game against No. 8 Old Forge (7-11) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Thousand Islands (16-2) is the top seed in the Class C-1 girls bracket. The Vikings (16-2) have a first-round bye and will host the No. 9 Beaver River (6-12)/No. 8 Sauquoit Valley (6-12) winner (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Ten boys teams and 11 girls teams qualified as they seek a spot in the finals to be held this year at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Here’s a look at the rest of the local teams.

Boys

Indian River (16-2) earned a No. 2 seed in Class A. The Warriors will host No. 7 Mexico (9-9) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Friday.

In Class B, South Jefferson (16-2) is No. 2 in a most difficult bracket. The Spartans play host to No. 15 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (7-11) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the first round. Also, No. 7 General Brown (10-8) is home to No. 10 Ilion (9-9) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Beaver River (16-2), on a 14-game win streak, claimed the No. 3 seed in Class C. The Beavers will entertain their Frontier League “C’’ Division rival, No. 14 Thousand Islands (9-9), in a first-round game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Immaculate Heart Central (7-10) is the No. 15 seed in Class C and will play at No. 2 Mohawk (17-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Alexandria (14-4) was seeded fourth in Class D-1 and will be home against No. 5 Cincinnatus (11-5) in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal on Friday.

Lyme (11-7) is the fourth seed in Class D-2 and will host No. 5 Oppenheim-Ephrata (8-9) at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Watertown (9-9) is the No. 11 seed in Class AA and will travel to No. 6 Nottingham (12-6) for a 7 p.m. first-round game on Tuesday.

Semifinals will be Feb. 24-25 at neutral sites, with all boys finals at the Dome on Sunday, March 4 beginning at 11 a.m. with the Class C championship game.

Girls

Unbeaten South Jefferson (18-0) captured the No. 2 seed in the loaded Class B-1 bracket, which has four state-ranked teams.

The Spartans open play with a home game against No. 7 Ilion (11-7) at 7 p.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Carthage (15-3) is seeded third in Class A and will play Frontier League “A’’ Division rival, No. 5 Indian River (11-7), at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Alexandria (14-4) is the No. 3 seed in Class D. The Purple Ghosts have a first-round bye and will host either No. 11 Rome Catholic or No. 6 Cincinnatus at 6 p.m. Thursday.

General Brown (9-9) is No. 9 in Class B-2 and will play at No. 8 Sherburne-Earlville (14-4) at 7 p.m. Friday. Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (9-9) is No. 7 in B-2 and will be at No. 2 Adirondack on Thursday.

Immaculate Heart Central (9-9) is the No. 11 seed in Class C-2 and plays at No. 3 Onondaga (13-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Other class D games find No. 8 Copenhagen (9-9) hosting No. 9 Otselic Valley (8-9) at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and No. 7 Sackets Harbor (11-7) hosting No. 10 Madison (8-10) at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Girls semifinals are also slated for Feb. 24-25 and the finals are March 1 and 2 at the Carrier Dome.
