A local battle between Frontier League D Division boys basketball rivals highlights this weeks Section 3 Tournament semifinal schedule for the eight area teams still playing.
For the second consecutive year, Sackets Harbor and Lyme will battle in a Class D-2 boys semifinal, scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Case Middle School. Top-seeded Sackets Harbor (19-0), the top-ranked Class D team in the state, has beaten No. 4 Lyme (12-7) three times this season, but was upset by the Indians in last years semifinals.
The only other boys team left, Beaver River, is also playing Wednesday. The No. 3 Beavers (18-2) meet No. 2 Mohawk (17-1) in a Class C semifinal at 8 p.m. at Rome Free Academy.
Among the girls semifinals, a Class B-1 semifinal pitting unbeaten South Jefferson against once-beaten Utica Notre Dame is a highlight matchup. The No. 2 Spartans (19-0) take on the No. 3 Jugglers (18-1) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cicero-North Syracuse.
On Tuesday, the No. 6 Immaculate Heart Central girls (10-9) meet No. 2 Little Falls (14-5) in a Class C-1 semifinal at 8 p.m. at Jamesville-DeWitt.
On Wednesday, top-seeded Thousand Islands (17-2) goes against No. 5 Herkimer (10-9) in a Class C-1 girls semifinal at 6 p.m. at Baldwinsville.
Alexandria (14-4), the No. 3 seed in Class D girls, plays No. 2 Oriskany (16-3) at 6 p.m. at South Lewis.
And on Thursday, No. 4 Carthage (16-3) has a tough task against. No. 1 Jamesville-DeWitt (18-1) in a Class A semifinal at 6 p.m. at Chittenango.
Split-class finals for boys and girls will be played on Feb. 28-29 at neutral sites.
Finals for girls are in the Carrier Dome on Thursday, March 1 and Friday, March 2. All five boys finals are in the Dome on Sunday, March 4.
