MASSENA — Since St. Lawrence Centre opened in the summer of 1990, shoppers could stop into Hallmark to pick up a card or gift for that special someone.

Those days are coming to an end as the store will close March 27.

Store manager Lisa R. Reno has been with Hallmark since it opened in Massena.

“I’m the last original store manager,” she said. “I think I’ll be lost when the store closes. I won’t know what to do.”

Ms. Reno said as the store works toward its closure, everything except for Easter and spring seasonal products is 40 percent off. As the closing grows closer, those prices will change to 50 percent off starting March 5 and 75 percent off starting March 19. Anything left in stock for the store’s final two days will then be marked down to 90 percent off.

“There was some talk of us moving somewhere else, but that appears to be a slim chance,” Ms. Reno said, adding the departure of TJ Maxx from the mall had a negative effect on sales.

“When TJ Maxx left, our sales did go down,” she said. She said the departure of TJ Maxx also gave Hallmark’s corporate office a chance to get out of its lease with the mall.

“The customers are upset,” she said, adding that collectors of Hallmark’s famed Keepsake ornaments seem to be the most disappointed.

While she’s not sure what kind of effect it will have, Ms. Reno said she’s encouraging customers to go to Hallmark.com and voice their displeasure about the situation.

Customers can do so via email by going to Hallmark.com and clicking on the “contact us” link at the bottom of the page under the “Our Company” heading. Once on the new page, click on the “email us” or “ask a question” link, bringing down a form that allows customers to send a message to Hallmark’s corporate offices.

Customers without email access may send letters to Hallmark Customer Service, P.O. Box 419034, Mail Drop 216, Kansas City, MO 64141.

“Hopefully something will happen that will change their mind,” she said. “Maybe they’ll listen to customer complaints.”
