Long still behind Doheny

So this is pretty much the same story as yesterday (party officials stand by their man), but with one important name to add: Mike Long.
The state Conservative Party chairman told me he's going to stick with Republican Matt Doheny, the man to whom he pledged his party's line in the effort to take out Democratic Rep. Bill Owens in November.
The two had a private conversation yesterday, and Mr. Long said he's satisfied with the answer that he got.
"I hope that we won't see any kind of photos like that in the future. It's not very helpful to himself and his private life. It's something he could do without," Mr. Long said. "I think it's poor judgment, without a doubt. But he's not a married guy, he is engaged. It displays a moment of poor judgment."
Rumors of Mr. Doheny's political demise, in other words, have been greatly exaggerated.
Also exaggerated? This video from the New York Post.
Billed as a "grope," the video would actually register as rather PG for all but the most sensitive viewers, in my opinion.
But there are some pretty obvious (and anonymous) attack lines in the Post piece that could come to a television commercial near you; the video and photos won't sink Mr. Doheny's campaign, as I've said before, but won't help, especially considering the fact that this might be the first impression on more than 200,000 new potential constituents in Warren, Washington, Essex, Herkimer, Fulton and Saratoga counties.
Don Coon, the Jefferson County GOP chairman, was unimpressed by the photos and the videos.
"The 'gotcha' photo/video is just that, and really deserves no consideration," he said in an email. "Matt has my full support going forward. It is clear that the left considers him to be a threat, and will stop at nothing, but that may be unfair, this may be just a case of a 'journalist' trying to make their rep by bringing someone down."
