About 150 New York Army National Guard soldiers, including some from Fort Drum, began a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Soldiers from Companies B and C of the 427th Brigade Support Battalion had been training at Camp Shelby, Miss.
Company B soldiers, from Fort Drum, will provide logistical support as U.S. forces prepare to close select forward operating bases. Company C soldiers, from Buffalo, will provide medical support.
Most of the 1,700 state National Guard soldiers in the 27th Infantry Brigade, mobilized in January, already have deployed to Kuwait; a small force, including soldiers from Ogdensburg and Ithaca, will deploy shortly to perform security at bases in Afghanistan.
