CLAYTON — Partnering with Alexandria Bay’s River Hospital, the Thousand Islands Young Leaders Organization will celebrate Earth Day at its third annual Green Fest on Saturday at Cerow Recreation Park.

New at this year’s event is the Health and Wellness Fair and a Volunteer Fair, which TIYLO hopes will generate enthusiasm among community members to work together and learn more about sustainable and healthy living.

As usual, a community cleanup will precede the 2012 Green Fest exhibition, which is held from noon to 2 p.m. at Clayton’s arena complex, 615 East Line Road.

Group assignments for the cleanup will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the arena parking lot, and the work will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at various locations around the village.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own garden gloves and rakes.

A free lunch will be provided to volunteers by local restaurants about noon.

The annual festival also features an Upcycled Fashion Show and Recycled Art Show, where community members turn outdated clothing and trash into fashionable art.

Both “upcycled” fashion items and recycled art must be made of at least 75 percent recycled materials.

For more information on the fashion and art show, call TIYLO member Lori Wilson at 767-4112. Entry forms are available at the Young Leaders website: http://www.tiylo.org.

Energy workshops — sponsored by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the town of Clayton — will be available for homeowners from noon to 1 p.m. and for small businesses and nonprofits from 1 to 2 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Clayton’s Highway Department will accept hazardous waste and electronic items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the highway garage on East Line Road.
